Doing an Employee Background Check is important whether you
are a large corporation or a mom and pop store with only 3
workers. Whatever your business is, everyone wants to hire
qualified, honest and hardworking employees to help make their
respective businesses successful.
Many companies, especially those with less than 20 people,
believe that doing an employee background check is not needed
and a waste of time and money. But a study has shown that
more than half of job applicants lied or submitted inaccurate
information on their resumes. This is very alarming and should
be seen as a very serious situation in the workplace today.
For some companies, doing an employee background check is
not optional. The law requires certain industries to do this
before they are even allowed to hire someone. Some of the
industries who are under law to do a search are:
• Health Care Providers – Hospitals and any health
care facility must do an employee background check on each
and every person they are considering hiring. This has been
shown to be especially important when dealing with children
and the elderly.
• Security Guards – As of right now, California
and New York have passed a law demanding that anyone in this
field be subject to an employee background check without exception.
Furthermore, it is against the law for any security company
to hire anyone, even a relative or friend, if they have been
convicted of a felony or misdemeanor.
• The Office of Inspector General of the Department
of Health and Human Services – This office mandates
an employee background check for every individual they are
considering hiring. Also, they have to exclude anyone who
was convicted of fraud, patient abuse, licensing board problems
and defaulting on health education assistance loans.
Companies who do an employee background check are no longer
in the minority. Most companies believe that the small amount
of money that they will spend do perform this search will
earn them much more in the long run.
As time passes, the federal government has passed and is
in the process of passing more laws which will demand that
these searches be extended to more and more individuals. When
dealing with children and young adults, no matter what the
field of endeavor, most states as well as the federal government
are looking to pass these laws that will prove to keep our
kids from harm.
